Through advocacy and outreach activities, our team works tirelessly each day to contribute their part to the greater good.
SdB at a glance
Spada di Bolognese is an Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) group whose goal is make the real fighting techniques of Medieval/Renaissance Italy as accessible and fun as possible for all ages and experience levels. No special equipment is required to begin.
Activities
We are a not-for-profit group which focuses on the fighting styles of Italy in late medieval/Renaissance period. We cover such weapon systems as the medieval longsword, cut & thrust sword, rapier, dagger and wrestling. However, our initial curriculum focuses on the "Bolognese" style of self-defense passed down to us through the writings of several Italian authors from the 16th century. These fighting manuals are read, interpreted and work-shopped extensively in order for modern students to apply these once deadly fighting techniques in a safe and enjoyable environment of self improvement and social interaction.
Swords are for everyone
Sword fighting is safe, educational and fun for kids, teens and adults of all fitness levels! All beginner padded "weapons" and protective equipment is provided and our flexible curriculum can be adjusted to any age/experience level. Our head instructor has over 10 years teaching experience, holds a blue card and has qualifications in fencing instruction and refereeing. Kids only classes can be arranged by appointment.
Tournament Training
If your goal is total domination in the tournament scene we cover that too! Each class involves drills, exercises and free sparring (with appropriate personal safety gear) that helps to hone your technique, fitness and muscle-memory for the split-second decision making required in tournaments. Our head instructor has competed in HEMA tournaments across Australia for over 10 years and is well respected in the Australian HEMA community.
Social Interaction
Become part of a dynamic and supportive community across Australia and the world! With new groups springing up all over the place, and now with a ranked historical fencing league, Australian HEMA is alive and well. Take part in competitions, inter-group workshops/events and social occasions throughout the year, or just get your geek on with other individuals who enjoy history, swords and a good chat!
What we are currently working on
Currently we are running another 10 week course in Bolognese sidesword according to Dall'Aggochi. We are covering basic dui tempi, parry-reposte actions from a variety of guards, provocations and the use of the modern fencing "tactical wheel," close/half-sword plays and their counters, and general tactical advice for modern HEMA fencing.
